there is something about the book thief that hit me really really hard. it puts the suffering of the people into perspective, in a way that history textbooks can never be able to. statistics are all very good, but they don't hit you this hard, until you focus on one person, one community, and multiply that by many thousands and millions and that's when you go wow, how did this happen, how could anyone let this happen happily, how did Hitler get a whole country to listen to him just like that? it's very scary and it's...i don't know, i love and fear that book at the same time, it's an amazing mix of literature and history.
