just take my hand and fly
January 17, 2012 @ 9:40 PM

been reading so many blog posts about OBS thus here is my obligatory and very late post:

OBS was beyond amazing. I've never done anything quite like it- even in p5, it was absolutely nothing compared to the five days.

DAY ONE:
...was slightly awkward la. we were still sticking in our small circles in the beginning, and to be honest it started off absolutely miserable because of sleep deprivation the previous night and feeling very much like an awkward turtle. it got better though, when we started to break out of our little circles and started really talking- by the end of the day everything was just pretty much happy and fun.

DAY TWO:
firstly, height elements! that was actually really fun- the flying fox was awesome. it's really cool how it takes 12 of us just for one person to fly down from up there, and how day two somehow managed to form us into one cohesive team. the feeling you get up there preparing to jump off looking down at everyone else, hearing the encouragement Raffles (yes i know we have such a cool watch name) keeps shouting at every single person, the mix of anticipation and extreme nervousness that just ended up with me closing my eyes and swinging off the ledge and the crazy speed and adrenaline rush in the first moments and the fear- until i just ended up relaxing and enjoying the ride which ended way too soon in the end. that made me realise that things usually aren't as scary as they appear to be- i think i've realised this many times in the past year but somehow i will still get ridiculously scared and end up backing out of things when there is no need to.
and after that- packing. which is incredibly annoying. especially when you have a tent in your bag and end up having to get someone else to carry your stuff for you so that we have a place to sleep at night. 'nuff said.
then trekking to camp 1 was crazy, but really not too bad la. although trekking with a 20kg bag is never a very fun thing- whatever.

DAY THREE:
kayaking :D was pretty much awesome. i will not talk about how it builds teamwork and blah because although it really does, foo ooi and i know each other too well to really talk about forming a team or anything like that. it was really fun though, and i discovered that OREO IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE IS HEAVEN. it really is. it tastes beyond awesome.
...k enough ranting about oreos. after that we went swimming in the quarry since it was still really early. it was the best part EVER- someday when i become rich i'm going to buy that quarry and build a quaint house with huge glass windows beside it with a huge lounge with nice soft chairs where i can sit there and enjoy life every day 8D. yes yes idealistic. but the moment when i jumped in was kind of freaky- for a moment it felt as though i was sinking and i panicked but then i started floating back up to the surface :D and you get used to it la, as i realised on day four. it was really amazing though- the class spirit was incredible, we were just all being crazy and insane and high together in the water and- aiya i can't really describe it, i don't think it's possible to know what it was like unless you were there.
oh and (i almost forgot about this) the staying up with nicole shanisse rachel tessa etc was amazing. haha looking out at the sea and at malaysia sitting on the rock feeling the cool night breeze feels really good- and a sense of calm and simplicity enveloped me it was so beautiful.

DAY FOUR:
rafting was really really fun, but that might be because i am in love with the quarry, and the race between Raffles and Magellan was just hilarious. Tessa's just like "Eh Raffles we've never lost before, we won't lose now either!" and the "slow and steady wins the race" hurhur (: it was so so so so fun. the trek was better than expected thanks to elaine and her constant chattering which i am incredibly grateful for. and throwing stones was pretty much okay- i'm not sure why everyone got so pissed at each other/themselves because for me it was simply a matter of focusing doggedly on the stone i was supposed to be catching so the annoyance and irritation didn't really catch up to me i guess.
i absolutely love pitching our tents by the sea and falling asleep looking at the lights of the mainland and hearing the gentle lapping of the waves.

DAY FIVE:
really not much to say la, except who would think of sewing at OBS?! still think its mental.
but when we were going back to the mainland, looking back at the waves splashing on me in the boat and staring at the tiny red dot that just gets smaller and smaller that is camp two and feeling this very unexpected sense of loss and reluctance to leave.

i guess what i realised from obs is that technology is really not required. we are all so glued to our phones, computers, emails, but at obs most of us didn't even think about using them, let alone miss them, and its actually much much easier to get to know each other that way. need to stop over relying on all this technology.
and at obs the stress of school just melts away la- academics, proposals, whatever. even things that i love like house, they melted away and it was really hakuna matata (IT'S A PROBLEM FREE PHILOSOPHY) and despite how much i cling on to amazing things like house, it does feel good to let it go sometimes, just for a while, to simply unwind and not worry about anything.
